Ojiro Kakumono bamboo woven baskets
Kakumono baskets were first produced in the Meiji period. The woven technique and style was originally developed in the Arima region of Hyogo Prefecture and was further perfected in the area of Beppu, Oita. It became so famous there that the category of baskets were known as “Beppu baskets”. The Oita region happens to be the best place in Japan to grow bamboo, and as a result it attracted the best basket producers.
Overtime people started using disposable products and the craftspeople who made these baskets started to disappear. Today there are only a few left with the skills to make a Kakumono basket.
One of these craftspeople is Kanzo Kantake, who apprenticed under the last horn master Yoshiyoshi Kantake. Kanzo Kantake continues to produce these beautiful baskets, and keeps this rich cultural asset alive.
